Nafakhum- The Niagara of Bengal

In Marma language, the word “Khum” means Waterfall.  Bandarban is called the kingdom of all Khums. Nafakhum is said to be one of the largest waterfalls in Bangladesh in terms of water flow. That is why Nafakhum is called the Niagara of Bengal. Nafa is a one species of fish.  This fish was found in abundance in Nafakhum Waterfall.  The name of this Waterfall is Nafakhum as fish named Nafa could be found in this Waterfall.

Nafakhum Waterfall is situated in Thanchi upazila, Bandarban.  Thanchi Bazar is located on the banks of the river Sangu. Thanchi is located 79 km from Bandarban. Remakri is located three hours by boat on the Sangu River from Tindu and Raja Pathor (Biggest/ King Stone). And Tindu is three hours by boat from Thanchi. The boat has to be slowly ascended towards Remakri along Sangu River. There are high hills on both sides of the river. Lots of stones scattered in this river. The stones are like a sculpture. After some distance, this Sangu River descends from 1-2 to 4-5 feet.  Remakri is a marma settlement upstream of Sangu River. You have to walk 3 hour from Remakri to Nafakhum. The wild water flow of Remakri canal came to this Waterfall and suddenly falls down about 25–30 feet.

The way to this Waterfall is a bit inaccessible. Although the way to go is difficult, seeing this Waterfall calms the mind. The beauty of this Waterfall and the mountain path will fascinate everyone. The sound of water is always heard in the Waterfall.  Dense fog is created around the Waterfall due to the impact of water falling from above. Rainbows can always be seen here in the sunlight and water droplets. If you are an adventure lover then of course we will ask you to visit the Nafakhum Waterfall. Nafakhum is an ideal place for those for beauty in foreign lands.

The real beauty of Nafakhum can be seen in September to October. The size of the Waterfall is large during the Rainy Season (August to October). In winter the Waterfall becomes small and weak.

How to go Bandarban:

Dhaka to bandarban By Bus: At first, you can go to Bandarban from Dhaka by Bus. Many bus companies are provided services of travelling Dhaka to Bandarban such as Eagle, S. Alam, Shanti, Shyamoli, Saudia, Saint Martin etc Paribahans AC & non AC service are available in this route. Those buses fare are TK. 550 top 1200.

Dhaka to Chittagong by Train: There are so many train services departs from Kamalapur , Dhaka for Chittagong. The intercity train Subarna Express, Mohanagar Provati, Karnaphuli Express, Mohanagar Goduli, Sonar Bangla Express, Turna Express etc are available for Chittagong. The fare of those trains is TK.160-1093.

Dhaka to Chittagong by air:  From Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport- Biman Bangladesh, United air, Regent Air, Novo Air and US Bangla Air fly daily to Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong. The fare of those air is TK.300-8000.

Chittagong to Bandarban by bus: You can go to Bandarban from Chittagong. Pubali and Purbani Paribahan buses run from Baddarhat to Bandarban. These buses are rented at TK. 200- 150 for per person.

Suppose you came to Bnadarban by bus from Dhaka at night. (In the morning)After reaching at Bandarban Town ( Bandarban bus station), you can hire Chander Gari(Jeep) to Thanchi. It will take 4 to 5 hour. Then you have to rent a Engine boat from Thanchi to go to Remakri. You can stay at Thanchi at night and leave for Nafakhum very early the next morning. Name and address should be written at Thanchi check post. Remakri will reach the market from Thanchi via Tindu. If all goes well, it will take 4 hours. You have to walk from Remakri Bazar to Nafakhum Waterfall. It may take you a total of 7 to 8 hours, including 3 hours to go to the Waterfall and 3 hours to return to Remakri. To get back to Thanchi, you need to have a Engine boat fixed in advance. From Thanchi you can go to Bnadarban town By Chander Gari/ local bus.

Where will you stay?

There is a rest house in Thanchi for tourists to stay. And there are also guest houses in Thanchi Bazar. There is an arrangement to stay in the houses of the tribals in Remakri Bazar and Tindu. And there is also a rest house in Remakri Bazar.

Where do you eat?

You will be able to eat comfortably in banboo-wooden house of the tribals. Almost every tribals house has the facility to stay and eat for very little money.

*Note:

1. There is 1 rest house at Remakri Bazar. Although the rest house is not vacant, there are 20/25 houses, almost each of which has rooms for rent. If it is not empty ( those houses) then there is 1 school, you can stay at the school to talk with the locals.
2. You can also go to Thanchi by local bus. Buses are running till a fix time every day. You have to catch the bus within that time.
3. You will keep the Chander gari and Engine boat driver’s number. Which will works if necessary.
4. It is compulsory to take a guide from Thanchi. There is a list of guides at the Thanchi BGB camp. You have to take a guide from there.
5. Guide- Remakri from Thanchi TK. 500 and Nafakhum from Remakri TK.600.
6. Must take with you Voter ID Card/ photocopy of college or university ID card/ birth certificate/ passport.
7. All tourist have to get permission  to go Nafakhum Waterfall by submitting the name, address, father’s name, phone number etc.  at Thanchi check post.
8. Must take trekking shoes.
9. Be sure to bring dry food, saline, water and some first aid with you.
10. To keep the weight of your backpack as low as possible.
